A new way of introducing business skills

image based training tool used in sierra leone

When marginalised women, who had little education, are living in poverty it might not seem obvious that their route to prosperity is through business.

However, the innovative image-based system used by Prosper is based on the idea that everyone and anyone can be an entrepreneur because they already have the skills.

Everyone can ask a question, so they can do market research; everyone can manage food supplies at home to feed the household, so they can manage a stock of products; and everyone manages their personal money, so they can manage the finances of a small business.

Prosper is not in the business of telling people how to run their businesses, or their lives. Their programmes are designed to guide participants to take decisions for themselves.

It does this via a training system that has been developed with a deep understanding of the traditional use of stories and parables to educate and inform.

The images are not simply a graphic interpretation of a business concept, instead they have been designed to be interpreted and build understanding of a concept so they can be applied to participants’ everyday lives.

Over the 12-week programme facilitators use the images to construct training sessions that develop the understanding of business concepts and the skills and confidence to use them.
